Yellow fever is a viral infection spread by mosquitoes in tropical regions. The vaccine is a live, weakened virus that provides lifelong immunity for most people. It’s legally required for entry into certain countries (e.g., Ghana, Brazil).

Who Needs the Yellow Fever Vaccine?

Developing countries (e.g., India, Southeast Asia, Africa, Latin America). Also rural areas or places with limited clean water (even parts of Southern/Eastern Europe).

High-risk travellers

Backpackers, aid workers, or those visiting friends/family in endemic regions. Also people with chronic liver conditions (higher complication risk)

Vaccine Schedule & Administration

  • Single dose: Given as an injection in the upper arm.
  • Validity: Starts 10 days after vaccination and lasts for life (WHO guidelines).
  • Boosters: Only needed if travelling from high-risk areas or previously vaccinated before 2016.

Common side effects:

Mild fever, headache, or soreness at the injection site (1–3 days).
