Tetanus is a serious bacterial infection causing muscle stiffness and spasms. The vaccine is typically given as part of the UK routine immunisation schedule (DTP).

Tetanus risk exists worldwide, especially in areas with limited medical care.

High-risk travellers

Adventure travellers, those working with soil/animals, or visiting remote areas where medical care may be delayed after an injury.

Vaccine Schedule & Administration

  • Primary series: 3 doses as part of UK childhood immunisation (DTP).
  • Boosters: Every 10 years, or after 5 years for high-risk wounds.
  • Combination vaccines: Often given as DTP (diphtheria, tetanus, polio).

Common side effects:

Sore arm, mild fever, fatigue (1-2 days).

Who cannot have the vaccine?

  • Those with severe allergic reactions to previous doses.
  • People with neurological conditions (consult doctor first).
