About the MMR Vaccine

The MMR vaccine protects against three viral infections: measles (highly contagious rash illness), mumps (swollen salivary glands), and rubella (German measles).

Who Needs the MMR Vaccine?

Measles outbreaks occur worldwide, including in Europe and North America.

High-risk travellers

Those born after 1970 who may have missed childhood doses, healthcare workers, and travellers to areas with current outbreaks.

Vaccine Schedule & Administration

  • Childhood schedule: Two doses (1 year and 3 years 4 months in UK).
  • Catch-up: Two doses at least one month apart for unvaccinated adults.
  • Validity: Two doses provide lifelong immunity for most people.

Common side effects:

Mild fever, rash, or swollen glands 1-2 weeks after vaccination.

Who cannot have the vaccine?

  • Pregnant women or those trying to conceive within 1 month.
  • Severely immunocompromised individuals.
