Meningococcal disease is a serious bacterial infection causing meningitis and sepsis. The vaccine protects against four major strains (A, C, W, Y).

High-risk destinations

The 'meningitis belt' of sub-Saharan Africa, especially during dry season (Dec-June). Also required for Hajj/Umrah pilgrims.

High-risk travellers

Long-term travellers, aid workers, those living with locals, and students studying abroad in endemic areas.

Vaccine Schedule & Administration

  • Single dose: Provides protection for about 5 years.
  • Booster: May be needed after 5 years for ongoing risk.
  • Required for Hajj: Must be administered at least 10 days before travel.

Common side effects:

Sore arm, mild fever, headache (1-2 days).

Who cannot have the vaccine?

  • Those with severe allergies to vaccine components.
  • People who had severe reactions to previous doses.
