Hepatitis A is a viral liver infection spread through contaminated food or water. The vaccine is highly effective and provides long-term protection.

Who Needs the Hepatitis A Vaccine?

High-risk destinations

Developing countries in Africa, Asia, Central and South America, and Eastern Europe. Also recommended for travel to rural areas or places with limited sanitation.

High-risk travellers

Backpackers, frequent travellers, aid workers, or those visiting friends/family in endemic regions. People with chronic liver disease are at higher risk of complications.

Vaccine Schedule & Administration

  • Two-dose series: Given as an injection, with the second dose 6-12 months after the first.
  • Validity: Provides protection for at least 25 years, possibly lifelong.
  • Combination vaccine: Available as Hep A & B (Twinrix) for convenience.

Common side effects:

Mild soreness at the injection site, headache, or fatigue (1–2 days).

Who cannot have the vaccine?

  • Those with severe allergies to any vaccine components.
  • People who had a severe reaction to a previous dose.
