About the Cholera Vaccine

Cholera is a bacterial infection causing severe diarrhoea, spread through contaminated water. The oral vaccine provides additional protection alongside food/water precautions.

Areas with active cholera outbreaks or poor sanitation (parts of Africa, South Asia, Haiti). Often recommended for aid workers in disaster zones.

Aid workers, healthcare professionals, and those visiting areas with limited clean water access.

Vaccine Schedule & Administration

  • Oral vaccine: Two doses given 1-6 weeks apart.
  • Validity: Provides protection for about 2 years.
  • Booster: Needed every 2 years for ongoing risk.

Common side effects:

Mild abdominal discomfort, diarrhoea, or headache.

Who cannot have the vaccine?

  • Those with severe allergies to vaccine components.
  • People currently taking antibiotics (wait 14 days after finishing).
